In The Double Liturgical Anniversary Weekend Pt I

28 Nov

On Saturday, November 28th, 1964, this was the last day of Regularly Tridentine Latin Masses of Daily Variety. The Gloria was offered in Latin. The Confitior was said by The Altar Boys and Response given by The Priest, just before Holy Communion.
And Corpus Christi+Amen was in Latin.
The Next Day, the Tridentine Form Mass on Sunday, November 29th, 1964 would premiere on the 1st Sunday Of Advent, without The Gloria. English was used except at the Offertory and Consecration. The “Judica Me Dei” of The Priest was eliminated, because the Confitior of The Priest was offered, followed by The Altar Server Response, then the Confitior was prayed by The Congregation, complete with the Saints and Blessed

Virgin Mary, with both The Saints and Blessed Virgin Mary being prayed Twice. Also, “You, Brethren”(Fratres)was prayed Twice. The Prayers at The Foot of The Altar, were retained. The Kyrie Litany was in the Tridentine Form(3 Kyrie, 3 Christe, 3 Kyrie). The Priest faced Liturgical East.  The  Readings of Epistle, Gradual , Alleluia(Tract), and Gospel were read in English as a matter of course for the 1st Time and not as an Afterthought after the Recitations in Latin. The Homily was preached. The Mass of The Catechumens was now called The Liturgy of The Word. The Mass of The Faithful was 1st called The Liturgy of The Eucharist.  The Nicene Creed was offered, as always on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation. The New Feature, originally for Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation, was the Prayers of The Faithful, based on The Great Litany of The Byzantine Rite Divine Liturgies of St Basil The Great and St John Chrysostom.
The Offertory Prayers of Sacrificial Nature, was now called The Presentation Of The Gifts, but these were still said in Latin, Quietly, by the Priest, and were still Propitiary in Practice, in that the Priest offered Prayers for The Remission of his Sins and for the Expiation of Sins of Faithful, borh Living and Dead.
Then, The Canon of The Mass, the Consecration followed in Latin.  The Our Father was recited by everyone in English for the 1st Time, followed by The Prayers For Peace. The “Kiss of Peace”, became an Optional Gesture, in what I call today “The Martyrs Wave”(There Is a Forest Hills, Queens Reference in this, at Ascan Avenue and Queens Boulevard at a Rather Large, You Can’t Miss It Parish). This Sign of Peace came from the Antiochian Rite Maronite Catholic Church, never seperated from Union with Rome.
Holy Communion was intact with Kneeling at the Altar Rail, with Priest reciting “The Body of Christ”, to which one responds “Amen.”
There were the Post Holy Communion Prayers. But, before receiving Holy Communion, which is on the Tongue, one chanted the “Domine Non Sum Dignus”, three times(Lord I am not Worthy), which the Priest said before receiving Holy Communion.
The Dismissal is given(Ite Missa Est), which response is “Deo Gratias(Thanks Be To God). The Priest recites his closing prayer, and then gives the Final Blessing, which we make the Sign of The Cross.
Eliminated from the Tridentine Form Mass is the Last Gospel(According to St. John, the Story of The Incarnation).

The Tridentine Latin Mass continued to be offered as the High Mass.
But, the Tridentine Form Mass carried on. What occurred 5 Years Later was(& to me, STILL IS) Radical and Protestantized but STILL Valid.

Kyrie Elaison!
