In NYC, Eastern Catholic Churches Of Note

16 Sep

One will hear the cries of Catholics, but to most Americans, they are of the Mindset of Catholics who think in terms of The Roman Rite(Your Local Parish).
If you hear names like Maronite, Melkite Greek and Syriac, fear not because these Particular Eastern Churches are as Catholic as your local Roman Rite Catholic Parish.

I feel Blessed to live in NYC, as there are a number of Eastern Catholic Churches in Brooklyn and Queens. The Armenian Eparchy for North America is located on North 6th Street in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. A couple of Blocks away is Holy Ghost Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church on North 5th Street. The BMT 14th Street Canarsie Train stops at Bedford Avenue North 7th Street, and is in walking distance of both the Armenian Catholic Church and Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church.

In Brooklyn Heights, The Eparchy of Brooklyn For The Maronites with Our Lady of Lebanon Cathedral is at Remsen and Henry Streets in Brooklyn Heights, within walking distance of The Clark Street IRT Subway station and the High Street Brooklyn Bridge IND Subway station. So in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn, two major Eastern Church Sees are located.

The Heart or Epicenter of New York’s Ukrainian Catholic Community is St. George Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church on East 7th Street in the East Village in Manhattan. They have a Sunday Divine Liturgy at 4PM in English. In the Byzantine Rite Divine Liturgy of St John Chrysostom, one will really begin to understand both the Tridentine Latin Mass and the Novus Ordo Mass from going to the Liturgy. It is truly beautiful. Take the IRT Subway to Astor Place Station and walk to 3rd Avenue and East 7th Street and walk to Taras Schevshenko Place and you will find the Church, built in Greek Style with Onion Dome. The Liturgy takes longer than the Ordinary Form Mass, but is truly beautiful and intense. By The Way, there is no organist and, best of all, no Marty Haugen Music. You will sing prayers and responses. If you are a Tridentine Latin Mass Type, you will really appreciate the Divine Liturgy.
Some blocks away at East 15th Street and 2nd Avenue, St. Mary’s Byzantine Ruthenian Catholic Church has a 10AM Divine Liturgy of St John Chrysostom. Take the BMT 14th Street Line to 3rd Avenue and walk over a couple of blocks. Also reachable by Southbound M15 Bus to East 14th Street and 2nd Avenue, as well as M14D Bus to East 14th Street and 2nd Avenue.

Unam, Sancta, Catolica!

The Archbishop Fulton J Sheen Place(E43rd Street)Conversations

1 Sep

I had a conversation with a Young Lady Convert to the Catholic Faith named Ann, originally from Dallas, TX, who started attending the Tridentine Latin Mass at St Agnes on East 43rd Street(Venerable Archbishop Fulton J Sheen Place).

St. Agnes has a huge population of The Young at the Tridentine Latin Mass. So does Holy Innocents, for that matter.

The Newer Traditional Catholics don’t just attend the Tridentine Latin Mass, but also the Byzantine Rite Divine Liturgy of St John Chrysostom at Ukrainian Greek Catholic Churches, such as St. George Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church on East 7th Street in the East Village of Manhattan, Holy Cross Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Astoria, Queens and Holy Ghost Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church on N 5th Street in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, quite a Tony Area today. These three Parishes have a good number of Holy Innocents Latin Mass Attendees.

So Ann, her friend Josh and I spoke of The Young Traditionalists, who are currently being criticized by His Holiness, Pope Francis I, who doesn’t seem to understand that the Young hate being talked at, as if the Young Traditionalists don’t even exist. But, I did speak about my theory that Pope Francis I was influenced heavily by the Byzantine Rite Ukrainian Catholics, whose stories of Persecution at the hands of Roman Rite Archbishops, may be driving his thoughts currently. The fact that the Novus Ordo Missae is all he celebrated in the Roman Rite and the fact that as a Jesuit Priest, he had Bi ritual Faculties, has also celebrated the Byzantine Rite Divine Liturgies of St John Chrysostom and St Basil The Great, means that he has more of a Preference for Eastern Catholic Church Liturgies.

Ann told me that she read about the 1054 Schism as a Tragedy, but I also pointed out that the Eastern Orthodox Christians reject much of Catholic Teachings. She did read about the Latin Rite Archbishops who refused to talk to the Byzantine Rite Catholics and wanted them to assimilate into the Roman Rite.

What Pope Francis I does not understand is that Today’s Young Traditionalists aren’t Yesterday’s Traditionalists. They go not for just the Tridentine Latin Mass, but also for The Great Traditional Catholic Liturgies of The Other Churches of Eastern Catholic Origin. I hope that His Holiness understands this.

Kyrie Elaison!

Theories On Pope Francis I’s Hostility Toward Those Who Want The TLM

30 Aug

In the theory or theories of The Current Pope’s Hostility Towards Traditional Minded Catholics who prefer the Tridentine Latin Mass, I do offer my observations on the subject. Please Note that these are my observations and theories.

My 1st Observation concerns Jotge Mario Bergoglio’s Youth, when he was Altar Server at a Ukrainian Greek Catholic Parish in Buenos Aires, Capital City of Argentina. There was a Sizeable Ukrainian Diaspora in Argentina. When The Ukrainian Greek Catholics came to Argentina, they were deprived of their Priests on the orders of The Roman Catholic Primate of Argentina, who wanted these Ukrainian Catholics to assimilate into the Roman Rite Church.
Apparently, in the case of The Roman Rite Primate, with the title of Cardinal, perhaps operating according to the Americanist Heresy of Certain Irish Born or Irish Diaspora US Bishops, of which Archbishop John Ireland and James Cardinal Gibbons certainly come to mind, this is probably When the Young Jorge Mario Bergoglio may have developed a certain animus toward the Latin Rite, as if it was “A 40 Stone(800 Pound) Gorilla”, who believes herself to be under attack, accusing any other Rite of The Church of being “Less than Catholic”, despite the Union of Brest-Livotsk in 1596, bringing Ukrainian Orthodox Christians back into Full Communion with The Holy See, with their Customs and Practices.
It is true that, often, the Latin Rite Bishops had trouble recognizing Eastern Catholic Churches, particularly from the Byzantine Rite. Byzantine Rite Catholic Churches, while united to the Holy See, recognizing the Pope as Vicar of Christ in this World, did struggle a lot with the Much Larger Latin or Roman Rite.

Jorge Mario Bergoglio was in a Jesuit Seminary in the 1960s, when the Jesuits were becoming “A Fifth Column”, instead of The Defenders of Catholic Doctrine. By the time of Jorge Mario Bergoglio’s Ordination to the Priesthood as a Jesuit, the Tridentine Form of The Mass, vernacularized, moved over to the Novus Ordo Missae. He has never offered the Tridentine Latin Mass. But, he gained faculties to offer the Byzantine Rite Divine Liturgies of St John Chrysostom and St Basil The Great, due to his orientation towards the Byzantine Rite. One could today, say that he is the 1st Ukrainian Pope, despite his Northern Italian Bloodlines.

He is an Ecumenical Vatican II Catholic Primate. What more can I say!

Thus the theories put forth are from my observations.

Kyrie Elaison!

Deo Gratias For The Order St. Francis Of Assisi Founded

29 Aug

If there is a couple of things I have learned, it is that the Latin and Byzantine Rites do complement one another, Liturgically.
This is especially true when the Ordinary Form of The Mass is offered. The Prayers of The Faithful-General Intercessions are variations of the Litanies of the Antiphons in the Byzantine Rite Divine Liturgy of St John Chrysostom and the Byzantine Rite Divine Liturgy of St Basil The Great, both of which are variations of The Divine Liturgy of St James The Apostle.

The Latin(Roman)Rite tends to be more Legalistic, as the Extraordinary Form of The Mass, called The Tridentine Latin Mass(Eastern Term is the Divine Liturgy of St Pius V), shows with two recitations of The Confiteor & More Formula in the Prayers, while the Byzantine Rite Divine Liturgy is more Litany and Antiphonal in approach.
As the Good Franciscan Priest put it to me after the Sacrament of Penance, that while the Latin Rite is the Legalistic Approach, the Byzantine Rite takes a more Holistic Approach.
I believe that I will continue to worship in both Rites.

Credo In Unum Deo
Kyrie Elaison

What Was It With R C Archbishops Vs The Eastern Catholics

28 Aug

When The Ukrainian Greek Catholics went to Argentina, they were deprived of their Priests, in 1912, by the Roman Rite Archbishop of Buenos Aires, who wanted Assimilation, American Style.

Ukrainian Greek Catholics then went into schism and became Orthodox Christians.

It sounds like Archbishop John Ireland had influence in South America.

I will say that I and other Traditional Catholics are grateful that the American R C Bishops did not get their way in trying to expel the Byzantine Rite Catholics. While the American Roman Catholic Bishops found ways to all but utterly forbid the Tridentine Latin Mass, there were the Byzantine Rite Catholics Churches with the Ancient and Beautiful Divine Liturgy of St John Chrysostom, a Liturgy often attended by Traditional Latin Rite Catholics.

Kyrie Elaison!

Another Sunday In Byzantium, Where Time Isn’t “Ordinary”

17 Aug

I remember a Poem which read “St. George, He Slew The Dragon.” Dragons are mythical creatures in the English Middle Ages. In the Ecclesiastical Sense, Dragons represent Demons.
So, I will be heading via “Iron Horse”(MTA NYC Subways via IND Queens Boulevard Line to Manhattan & IRT Lexington Avenue Local to East 7th Street and 3rd Avenue, via Astor Place Station, to St. George Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church for the 4:00PM Sunday Divine Liturgy of St John Chrysostom(Bishop, Confessor, Doctor of The Church, Feast Day on Ordinary Form Mass Calendar is September 14th, Tridentine Latin Mass Calendar is January 27th).
Just like Sundays in the Tridentine Latin Mass Calendar, today is the 10th Sunday After Pentecost. The Holy Readings follow a similar format to the Tridentine Latin Mass(In the Tridentine Latin Mass, it is Introit, Epistle, Graduale Romanum and Gospel and Homily), consisting of The Call(Wisdom, Let Us Be Attentive), The Epistle, Alleluia, Gospel and Homily.
Do note that Unlike both forms of Mass in the Roman Rite, there are Four Prayers for The Pope, The Major Archbishop, The Metropolitan and Diocesan Bishops, The Clergy and Religious and it is chanted.
Like in the Tridentine Latin Mass, there are the Sacrificial Prayers  in the Offertory and Consecration, which are offered For the Forgiveness of The Sins of The Priest and Congregation.
The Most Holy Sacrament of The Altar, Holy Communion, is under both forms of The Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity Of Jesus Christ via Intinction and one receives the Sacrament via a Gold Communion Spoon from the Priest. Please note that just like at the Tridentine Latin Mass, there are No Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion.
The Chants of Litanies form The Basis of The General Intercessions-Prayers of The Faithful in The Ordinary Form Mass. Standing For Reception of Holy Communion in the Ordinary Form Mass, comes from the Byzantine Rite.

None of That Awful Treacle, called “Bread Songs”, is ever sung here. Chants and Prayers are sung by the Cantor, who often doubles as Lector, who reads the Epistle, in a position outside of The Sanctuary.

Dominus Meus et Deus Meus.

The Eastern Orthodox Churches & Catholic Unity

6 Jun

The One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church, The Bride of Christ, is diverse in Her Unity in Her 22 Sui Juris Churches, both Eastern and Western.
The Eastern Catholic Churches are Orthodox by Tradition, but So Fully Catholic in Doctrine and Belief. They have different Disciplines, but believe the Same Doctrines as Western, Latin(Roman)Rite Church. Both the Eastern Churches and Latin Rite Catholic Churches have 7 Valid Sacraments and Holy Orders. The Priesthood is Valid.
But, there are Churches from the Line of The Apostles which are Not in Communion with the Holy See, called the Eastern Orthodox Churches. And, trust me on this one, there are a number of Doctrinal Differences which keep the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church from truly being United.
The Autocephelus(Self Governing)Eastern Orthodox Churches have no actual Vicar of Christ like that of One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church, though they do rule by Holy Synods. They have an Ecumenical Patriarch based in Constantinople(Present Day Istanbul, Turkey), who is only 1st Among Equals, which means he has all the power of The Queen of England(None). Think of him in terms of a Referee in the National Football League and you get the Picture.
These are the Doctrinal Differences which keep the Eastern Orthodox Churches and the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church, pretty far apart:
Original Sin-The Catholic Church teaches that from the Time when Adam and Eve, the Sin of The First Parents is passed down to each person born. This is removed by The Sacrament of Baptism and Sanctifying Grace ensues. But, the Eastern Orthodox belief is that Original Sin did not pass beyond Adam and Eve and that Baptism is only performed as a Sacrament of Divine Grace, due to the consequences of Original Sin, though they preach that one was never born with the Sin. If it is confusing like some explanation of Practice at Vatican II, it most certainly is;
Purification After Death(Purgatory) is actually the Teaching of The Christ, when He said “Until Thou Hast Paid the Last Penny.”
The Eastern Orthodox Churches teach that Souls actually undergo Purification in Hades, the Place of all the Dead. Hades has both Purgatory and Hell of The Damned.
The above comes from the Old Testament.
Catholic Church is No Divorce
Eastern Orthodoxy allows 3 Divorces and 3 Marriages.
Filioque(Double Procession of The Holy Spirit From the Father and The Son). Dogma in the Catholic Church. Denied by the Orthodox. Based on the Nicene Creed, originally written in Greek. Over this, the East West Schism occurred. The Orthodox teach that the Holy Spirit only proceeds from The Father. The Filioque is from the Catholic Church. Then why did Christ promise the Apostles the Holy Spirit when Jesus went Home to His Father in Heaven?
Immaculate Conception of Mary:
Dogmatic Belief of The Catholic Church. The Eastern Orthodox teach that since Mary, also called Theotokos(Christ Bearer), was Purified at the Annunciation, this Dogma is unnecessary, because no one actually has Original Sin beyond Adam and Eve.
One True Church;
The Eastern Orthodox claim this title, but how can this be done when Divorce is part of The Package. Jesus says “Divorce Not At All.” The Teaching on Original Sin is, as we used to say in Brooklyn, NY, a “Doozy.”

Sacrament of Holy Orders:
Both have a Male Only Priesthood & Male Bishops, but in The Churches of the Patriarchate of Moscow, Females may be ordained to the Permanent Diaconate(Russian Orthodox Church and Japanese Orthodox Church). Also, certain Greek Orthodox Churches do this as well & follow the Byzantine Rite Ordination Ceremony for Deacons.
As for this in the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church, NO.

As My Most Dear Friend once said to me one morning, “Just take a look at Russia and Greece, as to how both are so (@! :-)#&$ :-))up they are.” She, being a Convert to The Real, One, True Church Which Christ Himself Established, has spoken well.
I wonder just what St. John Chrysostom would say today?

St. John Chrysostom would never get s Show on E W T N, like the Dissident Orthodox would. He was the “Michael Voris” of his time. The ONLY Thing that Michael Voris would get on E W T N, is Blasted to Smithereens.

Kyrie Elaison!
M, Eh!
