The Parish Pub & The Parish Restaurant

31 Mar

In Pompano Beach, Florida, a Parish called St. Henry, Roman Catholic, has a Parish Owned Private Bar and Restaurant called Henry’s Hideaway. The pub was opened 30 Years Ago by an Interesting Pastor. That Pastor was from a place up in the Northeastern United States. From whence that Pastor came, an NBA Team called the Nets currently play. An NHL Team will be moving into that same facility in that burg. A Major League Baseball Team called the Dodgers used to play there.
OK, the Pastor was originally ordained by Titular Archbishop Thomas Molloy. You, I hope, are getting close to that answer.
Well, if you guessed that the Founder of Henry’s Hideaway is originally from “The Borough of Churches”, which is Brooklyn, you guessed right. That Pastor has both a Business Sense and a Sense of Humor. But the idea of a Catholic Parish of The Roman Rite, does cause for more than a few eyebrows to be raised.
But, the next Parish Owned Restaurant in this Country is in Manhattan’s East Village, where more than a few Ukrainians live.
The small restaurant on East 7th Street is called “Streecha’s”, and serves reasonably priced Ukrainian Food. The restaurant is owned by St. George Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church on East 7th Street. It is Home Cooked Ukrainian Food.
It is plain but good wholesome fare, which won’t bust your budget. And you actually get to meet Ukrainian Expatriates. The place is not fancy. It is not meant to be. It is meant to enjoy food and people.

I think that I may stop there on Saturday. I like trying new things. And it is for a great cause called the Byzantine Rite Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, a true underdog we can all get behind to root for versus Russia.

Pray Hard For Ukraine.
In Nomini Patris, Et Filli, Et Spiritu Sancti, Amen!

After The 4:00PM Divine Liturgy At St. George UGCC In The East Village

31 Mar

No, I did not stop at Mc Sorley’s Ale House, which is directly across the street from St George Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. It was a place where I would see this Parish from both Latin(Roman)Rite and Pixilated Eyes when I was in my 20s. But, one of these days, I would like to try Streecha, a small Ukrainian Restaurant, open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The Restaurant is owned by the Parish of St. George. If my excursion to Holy Ghost Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in the North Side of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, was any indication, I hope that the Stuffed Cabbage Is quite delicious. It is through my interaction with Parishioners of a Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, that I came to understand where the Americanized Irish Celebration of St Patrick’s Day came from. Besides, the Ukrainians cook a better Cabbage than any Irish Pub Cook, who happens to be a Yank of Irish Ancestry. Actual Irish from across the sea, will either head to a good Jewish Deli for a Corned Beef Sandwich, or head to a Ukrainian or Romanian Place for said fare.

This part of the East Village in Manhattan is Very Ukrainian. Valeria, a Compatriot from the Latin(Roman)Rite Tridentine Latin Mass of 1962 in Middle Village, Queens, referred to St. George Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church as the Centre of The Ukrainian Community in New York City. Much of this area is Ukrainian in culture and language.  Valeria thought that the Byzantine Rite Catholic Divine Liturgy of St John Chrysostom and St Basil Martyr is offered in Church Slavonic. Slavonic is the Root Language of both Russian and Ukrainian. I told Valeria that the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church offers the Byzantine Rite Catholic Divine Liturgy of St John Chrysostom and St Basil Martyr in both Ukrainian and English here at St. George. It has been the practice of Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church to offer the Byzantine Rite Catholic Divine Liturgy of St John Chrysostom and St Basil Martyr in both Ukrainian and the Language of The Country where that Particular Catholic Church is located.  But, to my Latin(Roman)Rite Mass Compatriot Valeria, the Byzantine Rite Catholic Divine Liturgy is offered in Full Traditional Sense, with Liturgical Propers Sung. The Thrice Holy Hymn of “Holy God, Holy and Mighty”, is sung with Majesty, Three Times. One will never hear ANYTHING composed by Marty Haugen, David Haas, Dan Schutte or ANYTHING from The St Louis Jesuits, of which Dan Schutte was a Member.

The Divine Liturgy ended a little bit after 5PM, and I noticed a display of photos from Parishioners with Relatives in Ukraine. I went over to talk to the Cantor/Lector. I made mention that I am Latin(Roman)Rite, and noticed that he too Faces East. He said to me that The Church faces East in Anticipation of The Christ’s Return. East is toward the Sky and Jerusalem. That is also the case in the Tridentine Latin Mass of The Missale Romanum of 1962 and Earlier, but only The Priest or Deacon does the Readings of both Epistle and Gospel. The Epistle, Graduale, Alleluia or Tract and Gospel are read in Latin, Ad Orientem, and then Epistle and Gospel are read in Vernacular, “Versus Populum”, along with Homily. I shook his hand and told him “Nice Job.”

So, I went to look at the photos of those people still in Ukraine. I prayed The Hail Mary. My eyes welled up with Tears. I then went over to a small altar. There was a Portrait of Blessed Pope John Paul II. I prayed there to Him as well.

For I remembered my father at this Mass as well as at Our Lady Queen Of Martyrs Roman Catholic Church at 1PM. I also remembered in my prayers at both Masses, deceased and living family members, on both sides of the Family. Also, remembered teachers who are gone, as well as old next door neighbors from Brooklyn.
And then, there were prayers for my most recent benefactors from Our Lady Queen Of Martyrs in Forest Hills. One of them is known as My Most Dear Friend. I also remembered in the Prayers of Yesterday, her Brother who died in Late October, 2013 and her father and grandmother.

It was a Prayerful and Emotional Day, but there was something to be grateful for in that the rain had stopped to allow this double Mass Day. The MTA NYC Subways ran without unannounced delays. I was early to both Liturgies. Thank You, God for Yesterday and Every Day.

Deo Gratias!

The Consecration Translation In English Was Not A Problem In The Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church

31 Mar

As the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church is one of 23 Sui Juris Churches which make up One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church, it practices in the Byzantine Rite.  As I was at the Byzantine Rite Catholic Divine Liturgy of St John Chrysostom at St. George Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church on East 7th Street in the East Village, I followed the Consecration of The Blood of Christ in English, with the Priest, The Very Reverend Canon Bernard Panchuk OSBM, facing East. This I have no problem with, as one who often attends the Latin(Roman)Rite Tridentine Latin Mass of The Roman Missal of 1962, where the Priest also faces East.  As he pronounced the Words of Consecration, the words “For Many” were proclaimed. “For Many” is now proclaimed, due to a revised translation, of the Latin, as “Pro Multis” means “For Many”, as from the word Multis, we get words like Multiple, Multi, and Multiplication. So, “Many” is appropriate as Translation.
In the Book of The Catholic Liturgy of St John Chrysostom and St Basil Martyr, the Consecration of The Blood words read “For Many”, but this Book from Basilian Press has a Copyright of 1988.
So, if a Catholic of The Latin Rite wanted to hear the words “For Many”, he or she would have to go to the Byzantine Rite Catholic Divine Liturgy of St John Chrysostom or St. Basil Martyr, in English. This Sui Juris Church maintained the true meaning from The Latin in regards to the Consecration. The Assorted Modernists were basically having a field day over in the Latin(Roman)Rite, translating “Pro Multis”, into “For All.”
The Byzantine Rite Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church kept “And With Your Spirit”, as translated from “Et Cum Spiritu Tuo.” This I also saw in the 1988 Divine Liturgy Book. Those in the Latin(Roman)Rite Ordinary Form Mass, saw a Humanistic Interpretation, reading “And Also With You”, which is used by the Evangelical Lutheran Communities in America and the Broad Church Episcopalians and Methodists. Whereas “And With Your Spirit”, pays tribute to the Sacrificing Priesthood, these other bodies don’t believe in the Eucharist as Sacrifice, hence no necessity for the Priesthood. Other Evangelical Christians also say “And Also With You.”
It was November of 1967, when Priests were given permission to offer the Roman Canon Consecration Prayers aloud. An update to “Pro Multis”, came in the 1st Sunday of Advent. The Words “For All” were uttered during the Consecration. The Modernists struck a blow. This gave rise to the Early Latin Mass Traditionalist Movement. This is all in the Latin(Roman)Rite of The Catholic Church.  The Folk Mass, forerunner of The Treacle Mass Movement, was underway. And many of The Catholic Faithful stopped going to Mass, became Episcopalians and Lutherans, or discovered the Byzantine Rite of The Catholic Church.
But, this “Dynamic Translation” into English, created less of a Catholic Atmosphere in the Latin(Roman)Rite. An example is in this prayer:
“Domine Non Sum Dignus, Ut Intres Sub Tecum Meum, Sed Tantum Dic Verbo, Et Sanabitur Anima Mea”, which is “Lord, I am not worthy that You should come under my roof, but only say The Word & My Soul Shall be Healed.”
But the “Dynamic Translation”, left the Spiritual Supernatural out of the Prayer, reading “Lord, I am not worthy to receive You, but only say The Word and I shall be healed”, as if the Soul never existed.
I can see WHY many Latin Mass Traditionalists often went to the Byzantine Rite Catholic Divine Liturgy of St John Chrysostom. Even when offered in English, it was the correct translation.
And there are no Folk Masses nor bad music being sung. The Mass Propers and certain prayers are sung, with one hymn sung at the start of Mass.
I like that far better than the 4 Hymn Sandwich being sung now.  This is a SACRED Event. It is True Church Liturgy. It awes. It inspires. It is not full of distractions.  I need to go more often to it than once per month.
And to think that this Liturgy was under our noses while we suffered through the bad translations all these years. I am overjoyed to be discovering this part of One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. The Catholic Church, as My Most Dear Friend is known to say, has everything, including East and West.

Two Rites, Two Liturgies=One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church

30 Mar

Pray For Ukraine.
For at 1PM Mass today at Our Lady Queen Of Martyrs Roman Catholic Church in Forest Hills, Queens, NY, the Pastor, The Most Reverend Paul Sanchez offered the Ordinary Form of The Holy Sacrifice of The Mass. The Deacon who read The Gospel was Deacon Greg Kandra.  For this Gospel, a Blind Man was cured of his blindness by Jesus. Yet, the Pharisees, whose modern equivalent today would be Lawyers in Civil Practice(1-800- LAWSUIT), decried The Christ on the Basis of believing that He committed a Shabbos Violation of performing work on The Sabbath.  The cured man testified that The Christ Petformed the Miracle. The Pharisees then told the Cured Man to get out of their sight.
In the case of the Blind Man, it was discovering his Faith. The use of water symbolized Baptism, which cleanses from Sin. The Pharisees, who thought they knew everything about God, but were stubborn and blind when it came to Jesus Christ in performing His Miracles, were truly not the Holy Men they were purported to be.
At the Byzantine Rite Catholic Divine Liturgy of St John Chrysostom at St George Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in the East Village at 4PM, the Gospel centeted on a Christ Miracle, this time curing a Mute, possessed by a Demon. Jesus ordered the Demon out of the man. Yet, like with the Pharisees before, certain Jealous types(Pharisees Alert), tried to claim that Jesus Christ is from Satan. Some people are jealous, who refuse to see and hear the good.
The Sacrament of Penance(Reconcilliation) & The Eucharist were preached about by the Very Reverend Canon Bernard Panchuk OSBM Superior and Pastor of St. George Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church.
Grace and Salvation was the Order of the day in Two Catholic Church Rites, Two Liturgies in One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church.

In Memorium of My Father, who would have been 94 On March 29th, Ad Aeternam Et In Paradisium, Amen!

The BBC Is Back

30 Mar

As the Gulf War in 1991 was underway, there was One Source I could rely on. This was in the days of Portable Shortwave Radio, long before Phone Apps. After all, in 1991, telephones were made only for talking.

The BBC(as in the British Broadcasting Corporation), via the World Service, is what I most often listened to. I still  listen to BBC, but thanks to an App, One can listen over the web to their Domestic Services as well as the Local Services. This is one of the benefits of The Web.

Shortwave Radio, in retrospect, was so limited in scope. Besides, there is no static via the Web.

And like CBC Radio and BBC, I carry these services in my pocket via Android Smartphone. There is no need for a big radio to lug around.

Fun, isn’t it!

iHeart Radio App Brings Me Up To Speed

30 Mar

Tune In Radio App was quite good, but, all of a sudden, both WOR 710 & WABC 770 were not there for me. I do like “Imus In The Morning”, “Rush Limbaugh”, “Sean Hannity” and certain good stations I remember.
My next maneuver is for MLB Radio Package so I can listen to both the Boston Red Sox and the NY Mets.
I do have a seperate Radio App to listen to CBC Radio One, Two and Three. Both of these apps use far less in MB than did The Tune In Radio App.
If I want the BBC, there is always an App for that.

Rain Delay To Topple Citi Field Opener

30 Mar

The NY Mets are scheduled to open at Citi Field on Monday, March 31st. They face the Washington Nationals, the only team in MLB History, never to call a US State a Home State.
The Washington Nationals, you see, are the Old Montreal Expos. It is reflected in their Road Uniforms. Whereas they once called The Canadian Province of Quebec and for two seasons for part of the season, San Juan in the US Territory of Puerto Rico, Home Base, they now call the District of Columbia, Home, in the Nation’s Capital.
Oh, Well, there is always April Fools Day on April 1st to get the Season Opener played.
This is true about March, which usually comes in Like a Lion, but, this year, it will either go out like a Lion or just a big old Bear. The Weather may have gotten a bit milder, but it is raining Cats and Dogs. It is the latest reminder of “The Winter which doesn’t want to go away.”
There isn’t a hint of spring, as no flowers have even begun to bud.
