“Happy Easter…..Again”

3 May

“Christ Is Risen”:
“Indeed He Is”;

A Goodly # of The RC Faithful who attend the Tridentine Latin Mass, were planning on heading to what is called “Russian Easter” or “Greek Orthodox Easter.” For Easter on the Old Julian Calendar was late this year. And there are Byzantine Rite Catholic Churches which are on the Old Julian Calendar.
St. George Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Manhattan’s East Village on East 7th Street between The Bowery & 2nd Avenue is where there is a sizeable Ukrainian Population. As many of my Tridentine Latin Mass Compatriots were at the Easter Vigil at St. George or at the Russian Orthodox Cathedral, I decided to head to the Easter Sunday 4PM English Language Divine Liturgy.
The Very Reverend Father Bernard Panczuk OSBM, who is Pastor of St. George, was not feeling up to the 4PM Mass, but the Celebrant was good & it turned out to be The Ukrainian Bishop of the Eparchy of Stamford, CT, His Grace, The Most Reverend Paul Patrick Chomicky, a Canadian from British Columbia & One Time Chartered Accountant. He is from the Order of St. Basil The Great(OSBM or Ordo Sancti Basili Magni).
His Deacon was Fr Peter Shyska, the just retired Principal of St. George Academy High School. He preached the Gospel & Homily.

The Day of No:
This is Good & Holy Friday. It is a Day of Mourning for Christ was led to His Death on The Cross. Churches are barren of all decorations.
Yet, Christ descended to the part of Hades, where the Just were held & He freed the Just to take them to Paradisio(Heaven).
Yet, it is Sad because The Apostles were with Him. And Now The Apostles were Alone & Living In Fear.
This is a Day of No Joy because Christ’s Earthly Existence Had come to an End. And it was a Violent End.
And Maria Semper Virgine pondered on this in Her Heart.

Easter is Yes;
For Christ, in His Glorified Body, is Risen from Death. He conquered Death by Death.
Christ Is Risen!
Indeed He Is!
Yes, there is Joy & Not Sadness.

Deo Gratias! It was a Great Divine Liturgy.

At the End of The Divine Liturgy of St John Chrysostom, we were invited up to receive a Special Anointing from Bishop Chomicky, as well as the Blessed Bread(Antidoron).

Parts of The Liturgy were chanted in Ukrainian. There is a new Cantor/Lector named Paul. Bravo to him, he did a great job.

In One, Holy, Catholic & Apostolic Church, there are many Paticular Churches, but only One Church, and Founded By Christ, in Perfect Unity. For Christ told his Apostles & Disciples to go forth to All Nations, Baptising them In The Name of The Father, Son & Holy Ghost.
Christ Promised to be with His Church, until The End of The World.

Chris Is Risen, Indeed He Is.

End Year “Thanks” To MTLOA- NOT

1 Jan

MTLOA is the Metropolitan Transportation Lack Of Authority. This applies whenever MTA NYC Transit’s Subways are run, irresponsibly. Like the Suprise Rerouting of an E Express Train at Roosevelt Avenue, without announcing it, adding 25 Minutes to the trip, DURING RUSH HOUR.

I would have been 15 Minutes Early for a very Faith Filled New Years Eve at St. George Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in the East Village on E.7th Street in Manhattan, beginning with The Byzantine Rite Catholic Divine Liturgy Of St Basil The Great. Instead, without announcing anything, the E Express Train starts running via the R Local Tracks, making all Local Stops into East 53rd Street & Lexington Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, adding 25 Minutes to my trip, IN RUSH HOUR.

Yet, as I made it to my Moose Lodge in Maspeth, Queens to cool my heels & head, the R Train ran Express on the Local Tracks to Woodhaven Blvd & 59th Avenue, where I caught an uncrowded Q59 Bus. But, after 2016 Rolls in, I will journey to the 6:00AM Divine Liturgy Of St John Chrysostom at St. George Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. This way, I will open 2016 Byzantine Rite Style. I just want to do it differently & head to a Latin Rite Mass, probably at St. Agnes on East 43rd Street.

After all this, I will need a Good Rest, away from all this.

Agnus Dei, Qui Tollis Peccata Mundi, Miserere Nobis.

“Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom at the 2013 Napa Institute Conference” on YouTube

18 Aug

This EWTN Special Presentation is of the Napa Institute Conference.
The Divine Liturgy of St John Chrysostom, Bishop, Confessor, Doctor of The Catholic Church, is a Liturgy of The Byzantine Rite of The Catholic Church as well as the Eastern Orthodox Churches.
Many Traditional Catholics, without access to the Tridentine Latin Mass in the 1970s, often went to the Byzantine Rite Catholic Divine Liturgies, as opposed to the Novus Ordo Mass, because to Traditional Catholics, the Novus Ordo Mass was heavily Protestantized Liturgy.

Do note that in the Divine Liturgy, the Priest faces Liturgical East, just like in the Tridentine Latin Mass.
The idea of Lay Lectors and Cantors, is Byzantine Rite in Origin, but none are in the Sanctuary. In fact, like the Priest, the Cantor & Lector, who are often the same Man or Woman faces Liturgical East just like The Priest. So if you have a Permanent Deacon at Mass preaching The Gospel, this is of Byzantine Rite Origin.
Holy Communion Under Both Species is of Byzantine Rite Origin. Standing for Holy Communion is also Byzantine Rite Origin.
But, Holy Communion In The Hand(A Mano) is Protestant in Practice.
The Byzantine Rite Practice of receiving both Body and Blood, is via Intinction and one receives the Sacrament via a Priest who utilizes Holy Communion Spoon to drop the Body and Blood, Soul & Divinity of Christ in one’s mouth, head tilted back.
If only the Roman Rite could do this, instead of Station To Station, it would cut out Holy Communion A Mano.
If anything, the Divine Liturgy of St John Chrysostom is Ancient, Traditional, Beautiful and Catholic. The Novus Ordo is NOT.

BUT, the Novus Ordo is still a Valid Mass.

The “Latin” Memorial Day Weekend

23 May

Today on Saturday at 1PM is the Beginning of The Pentecost Octave, which ends Next Saturday, ending Eastertide on the Tridentine Mass Calendar. Mass in Latin is at Holy Innocents in Midtown Manhattan.

Next Saturday, is The Octave Day of Pentecost. It is also a Saturday of A Pentecost Sunday Vigil at Holy Cross Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Astoria, Queens.

I believe that I will be basically attending Novus Ordo Masses on Weekday Mornings Only.

“Mass Of Prayer, Mass Of Noise”

13 May

In One, Holy, Catholic & Apostolic Church, one gets the Impression, that there is only one Rite, and that is the Roman|Latin Rite. It is the Largest of The Rites and can be found anywhere in the World.
This is True. There is a Liturgy called The Mass. And it is offered “Versus Populum”, that is, with the Priest facing the Congregation.
This is How PROTESTANTS offer their Liturgies.
The current Mass, called ” Missa Paulum VI “, is the Modern Version of Mass. Mass comes from the Latin word Missa, which means Mission. ” ITE Missa Est” is Latin for “Go Forth, Thou Art Dismissed.” Actually, Mass does not end until the Priest leaves the Sanctuary. Then it is truly finished.

The Modern Version of the Mass is not a Contemplative Mass. It misconstrues “Actual Participation”, confusing it with
” Active Participation.”  It is one that requires Noise, often in the form of some kind of Dialogue. It stresses less of The Mystery of The Eucharistic Sacrifice of Christ and more on Verbiage and The Active Participation of Laity in Liturgical Function, with the Priest as Master of Ceremonies, instead of his true role of acting “In Persona Christi” in offering to God The Father of The Sacrifice of The Son, Jesu Christe, called apart from the Congregation, through the Sacrament of Holy Orders(And Several Years of Careful Preparation in Seminary, leading to Ordination), as “Alter Christus” or “Another Christ.”
In the Sacrosanctum Concilium, a major document on the Sacred Liturgy, with Primary and Secondary Elements, written with Ambiguous Language as to make Secondary, equal to Primary, in justifying some new action, a “Conniving Barrister Type”, namely the Benedictine Arch Abbot called Rembert Weakland, he being from The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania where he was born and reared, the American Modernist Contribution of Liturgical Music of Self Edification, in the form of Dionisian Music(based on the Greek god of ecstasy), comes under the part emphasizing Gregorian Chant, through the words “Or Some Other Suitable Music”(This is the part which Gary Michael Voris never took time to read).
Weakland and Company, during the time when the Tridentine Mass was vernacularized, including the deliberate mistranslation of ” Pro Multis ” to “All” instead of “Many”, found a loophole in the Gregorian Paragraph, in order to hoist this on America(And Eventually The World). This was 1st tried at an All Boys Catholic High School in Latrobe, PA, more often associated with the Famous Beer seen in the Academy Award Winning Film, ” The Deer Hunter”, called “Rolling Rock.” It was in “The Deer Hunter”, where I actually saw a Byzantine Rite Slavic Wedding Ceremony Scene.

One could see from the 1st Offering of The New Mass, dubbed ” Novus Ordo ” by Alfredo Cardinal Ottaviani, in what is called “The Ottaviani Intervention” that the emphasis is on Man, not God.
While the so called Sacred Music is supposedly derived from the Book of Psalms, it is written with Emphasis on Man.
And much of the Music speaks not of Catholic Doctrine but of the “False Ecumenism”, so prevalent in The Era of Vatican II and Beyond. I shall speak of Two Eucharistic Hymns, played at Holy Communion Time at Mass.
Last Year, at The Feast of The Ascension, at the 7:00PM Vigil Mass at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs in Forest Hills, Queens, in the R C Diocese of Brooklyn, the Communion Hymn was a Classical Hymn which reflected the Eucharistic Theology of The Mass and was often sung at Holy Communion Time.
It was sung with Gusto by the Congregation. Following is The Refrain:
” O Sacrament Most Holy,
O Sacrament Divine,
All Praise and All Thanksgiving,
Be Every Moment Thine.”
Young People sang it along with Older People. This truly spoke volumes that what is Traditional and Beautiful, is Cherished and will be sung.
This Hymn speaks of The Mass as Sacrifice of The Christ at Calvary.

By The Feast of The Assumption(Mary Rising To Heaven), after intensely beautiful Marian Music, the Mass as Sacrifice took a wrong turn at Holy Communion Time, with “Mass as Meal” Theology taking over. If ever there was a Treacly Hymn, written to emphasise that Holy Communion is only a Spiritual Eating in Memory of Jesus Christ, then that Hymn is “Gift Of Finest Wheat.” It is Ecumenical, NOT Catholic and emphasizes a Memorial Meal instead of Sacrifice, which explains the Novus Ordo Mass quite well.
I recall My Most Dear Friend, who upon hearing “Gift Of Finest Wheat”, recoiled with both Rage and Horror, and knelt down in prayer. While it praises The Lord for His Gift, it does not emphasise His Sacrifice. The Hymn is sung by Protestants as well as Catholics, because it emphasizes a Memorial Meal.
And I do remember a Text Message which she sent me, which read “I heard this hymn at Mass on Sunday. I HATE ‘GIFT OF FINEST WHEAT.’ It is treacle and does not draw in.”
To think that “G o F W” actually won a contest to be the Official Hymn of the 41st International Eucharistic Congress, held in Philadelphia in August, 1976, tells me a lot about the Modernism of Post Vatican II, as an Age of False Ecumenism and an Age of Mere Self. From Glory to Gooey, it is a “Mass” ive Mess.

She once sent me a series of Liturgical Songs called “Bread Songs” while asking about whatever happened to “Mass As Sacrifice.”
All of it was Horizontal in substance. None of it was Vertical in substance. She was discovering the World of the Novus Ordo Version of The Roman Rite.
She is a Convert. She is somewhat enraged over “Novus Ordo Land” (A Name Coined by Christopher A. Ferrara, J. D.), where Homilies are too worldly(She was furious about a Homily, centred around Comedian Robin Williams).
Her Original Church is Greek Orthodox, where the Sacraments and Holy Orders are valid.
She utterly DESPISES “Bread Songs” for not being of Transcendant Quality. I cannot blame her, as much of this alleged Liturgical “Music” is so “Humanity Centred”, as cheap filler, that it distracts from Worship of The Triune Godhead.
That a song like ” Gift Of Finest Wheat”, Treacly in Tone, Music which would cause Eastern Catholics to either laugh themselves silly or head to the nearest “Vomitarium”, talks about ” Finest Wheat”, rather than The Body of Christ, has helped turn The Holy Sacrifice of The Mass into a Camp Singalong. Not only that but the music often contradicts the Theology of The Mass. There is more to Catholic Church Worship than the Novus Ordo Mass, a Liturgy with very little consistency.
One of the problems of the Ordinary Form Mass is the question of “Participation.”
I was in 2nd Grade at a Catholic School in Brooklyn when our classes were taught how to read Latin, as well as the Kyrie, which was our 1st Exposure to Greek. Thank goodness for Phonics which made reading words much simpler. But our 1st Exposure to another  language was Latin.
I do remember the Latin Mass from the 1960s. There was much Silence. So when I went to the Tridentine Latin Mass in January, 2007 for the 1st Time since November of 1964(Over 42 Years), I still remembered just enough to get by without a Missal.
It has been said that there wasn’t any real participation in The Mass. But there is True Participation in that Mass. It is NOT about singing Horrid Little Ditties like “Table Of Plenty”(A Dan Schutte Contribution to Circular Filing Systems most often called Trash) at The Offertory. In reality we prayed the Prayers at The Foot of The Altar, the Second Confiteor, Gloria In Excelsis Deo,  and the Nicene Creed. We listened to Epistle, Graduale Romanum, Alleluia and Gospel. We said the Responses to the Preface to The Roman Canon. We then prayed the Sanctus.
We Gazed upon The Body & Blood of Christ & prayed Silently. The Priest prayed these prayers inaudibly, but one could hear something.
The Priest prayed the Our Father, so we responded with Sed Libera Nos A Malo(But Deliver Us From Evil). Our Communion Prayer was the ” Domine Non Sum Dignus “(O Lord I Am Not Worthy).
We went to Holy Communion and Knelt at a Holy Communion Rail, separating the Sanctuary from the Nave. The Priest made the Sign of The Cross with the Sacred Host & said a short prayer with No Response by us. We were not allowed to chew it, for that Host is The Body of Christ. A Paten was put under the chin to prevent the Host from falling to the ground, as well as to keep the Sacred Host Particles from falling to the ground to be trampled underfoot.
There were announcements from the Pulpit. Then the Closing Prayers & Last Gospel. This is a Mass without singing. It was the same in 1962, as it is now.
The Missa Cantata is The Sung Version of The Mass. You follow the Schola and sing your parts.
Of course if you are going to the Novus Ordo, St. Agnes on East 43rd Street has Gregorian Chant and Incense. Many prayers are said or sung in Latin. It is a Rare Find and is in Midtown, Manhattan by Grand Central Terminal. They still have a Great Tridentine Latin Mass.
Over on West 37th Street is Holy Innocents, Home to the Only 7 Days a Week Latin Mass.

What many Roman Rite Catholics don’t realize is that there are 22 Eastern Catholic Churches in Union with The Holy See.
I find myself in Awe of the Byzantine Rite with the Awe Inspiring Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom(Bishop, Confessor, Doctor of The Church). There are no Organists in these parishes. The Human Voice is the Musical Instrument. The Cantor will take you along. Choirs also abound. Byzantine Chant is a Truly Divine Experience. Tridentine Latin Mass Catholics often go to this Liturgy.
The Ukrainians, Ruthenians, Romanians and Russians have incredible Divine Liturgies along with the Melkites(Arab and Greek).
The Antiochian Rite Maronite Catholic Cathedral of Our Lady of Lebanon is in Brooklyn Heights on Remsen Street by Henry Street. The Divine Liturgy of St. James The Apostle, the Root Liturgy of The Divine Liturgies of both St. Basil The Great(Bishop, Confessor, Martyr, Doctor of The Church)&St. John Chrysostom, are descended from this Liturgy, called in Arabic the Holy Qurbano.
They actually have a Ceremonial Sign of Peace, where after the Kiss of Peace by the Priest to the Deacon, the Altar Servers are sent to shake the hands of the 1st Person in a Pew, who then passes his sign of Peace to the person beside him or her.
In Brooklyn’s Sunset Park, there is even a Coptic Catholic Church of the Alexandrian Rite, which uses the Egyptian Version of The Divine Liturgy of St. Basil The Great.

You’re Catholic. And The Catholic Family is huge.

Deo Gratias!

“Christ Is Risen, Indeed He Is”(Byzantine Ukrainian Catholics)

13 Apr

So speaketh the Very Reverend Father Bernard Panczuk, Pastor of St. George Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, at the Sunday 4PM Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom. For Today, Christ is Risen & Today is Easter Sunday in both the Eastern Orthodox and Eastern Catholic Churches on the Old Byzantine Calendar, as well as for those Churches of the Roman/Latin Rite when these Western Churches are in a Byzantine Rite Majority Region.

The Gospel According to St. John The Apostle, was that of The Story of The Incarnation(And The Word Was Made Flesh). Those of you who go rather frequently to The Tridentine Latin Mass, know this Gospel, because it is recited by the Priest at the End of The Tridentine Latin Mass. Latins do genuflect at the phrase ” And The Word was made Flesh.”
And so, in the Words of Remnant Editor Mr Michael Matt, I “took a knee” at the words “& The Word Was Made Flesh.”

Those of You who often go to the Tridentine Latin Mass(T L M)@ Holy Innocents & St. Agnes, particularly at Holy Innocents, have knowledge of the Byzantine Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom, especially the Catholic Version at St. George Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church on East 7th Street. It is on East 7th Street at 2nd Avenue where a serious building collapse occurred about a week ago. Strange but more People have been going to Liturgies at St. George. It is a Great Sign for the Parish.

There is No Holy Communion “A Mano”, here. Those of you who frequent the “Missa Novus Ordo” with Holy Communion being placed in your right hand, well, just like at the T L M, it will not occur at the Divine Liturgy.
Unlike in the “Missa Novus Ordo”, There is no Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion holding a Chalice. Only the Priest may distribute Holy Communion. The Sacrament is by Intinction and distributed to Communicants using a Gold Plated Communion Spoon.

This Easter Celebration this Year is the 1st Time I have celebrated Easter Sunday Bi-Ritually. Last Week, it was the Saturday Night Tridentine Latin Easter Vigil. This Week it is the Byzantine Rite Catholic Easter Divine Liturgy.

After receiving The Most Blessed Sacrament of The Altar, both Body and Blood, my eyes welled up with Tears, as I returned to the Pew.

A Farewell Blessing by Anointing, to remind The Faithful of The Sacraments of Initiation(Baptism & Chrismation[Confirmation to Those Faithful From The Roman/Latin Rite]) was done by a Visiting Priest, as this Divine Liturgy was concelebrated at St. George. The Blessed(Not Consecrated) Bread, which in Greek is called Antidoron, was given upon request. This is the only known Time of The Liturgical Year that this is done in This Parish.

Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia!

Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom at the 2013 Napa Institute Conference: https://youtu.be/YzFOuz_hAbw

This is a major Conference of the Catholic Church, Predominantly in the Roman Rite, this Byzantine Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom(Bishop, Confessor, Doctor of The Church, Tridentine Calendar Feast is January 27th in keeping with the Celebration of The Three Holy Hierarchs of The Eastern Catholic Churches of One, Holy, Catholic & Apostolic Church and in the New Liturgical Calendar of the Ordinary Form Mass on September 14th)was offered at the Napa Institute Conference to show the Diversity of Expression in the Liturgies of The Church.
With a Choir, this Timeless Liturgy which is over 1600 Years Old & Older than the Tridentine Latin Mass, is one of Wonder & Awe.
Even without a Choir, it is a Liturgy of Wonder & Awe, for from November 2013 to October of 2014, I went to 23 Ukrainian Byzantine Divine Liturgies offered in English at St. George Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in the East Village In Manhattan & Holy Cross Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Astoria Queens.
I have to go back to Mass in both locations. I an awed by that Liturgy.
.

Crossing That Strait To Go “East”

22 Feb

I will be headed across a Strait via the “Iron Horse”, by traveling Westward to head to the East.
In short, the 4:00PM 1st Sunday Of Lent Byzantine Rite Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom is where I am headed, and that is In the East Village of Manhattan, to St. George Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. The Divine Liturgy is the same thing as the Holy Sacrifice Of The Mass.
I am Roman Rite Catholic, but I often seek within One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church, a Glorious Liturgy not filled with such distraction as Manufactured Modern Liturgical “Muzak”, nor Novelties such as who gets to present the Bread and Wine to the Priest at the Offertory, nor the Reception of Holy Communion A Mano. To me, singing most of that Muzak doesn’t constitute an Actual Participation in the Mass.
So here where Heaven and Earth are joined in the Divine Liturgy, I shall go. It is here where The Instruction Of Christ to St. Peter to “Feed My Sheep” is done in both Word & Sacrament, where one is Fed the Precious Body & Precious Blood of Jesus Christ, via Holy Communion Spoon.
One cries out to God for the Remission and Expiation of Sins at the Divine Liturgy, with “Lord Have Mercy” chanted multiple Times.

Ora Pro Nobis!

Theophany(January 6th, Julian Calendar)

19 Jan

Which is Today, January 19th on the Gregorian Calendar. Theophany was explained on January 11th(Gregorian Calendar), which is December 28th(Julian Calendar) at the 1PM Mass at Our Lady Queen Of Martyrs RC Church by Parish Administrator, Rev. Father Francis Passenant, as the Revelation Of The Christ beginning His Public Ministry by being Baptized in The River Jordan by John The Baptist.

On Sunday After Theophany, the Waters are Blessed. I will head to the Saturday Vigil 5PM Divine Liturgy at Holy Cross Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church for both The Divine Liturgy Of St John Chrysostom and Blessing of The Waters. People receive the Hyssoping at this Liturgy, as Real Hyssop is used. People also receive a reminder of their Chrismation via Wand from the Priest.
And since the Divine Liturgy Of St. John Chrysostom can be used to fulfill one’s Catholic Church Sunday Obligations, Holy Communion, under both forms of Body and Blood, via Intinction via Holy Communion Spoon, will be given.

Deo Gratias!
