Catholic Calendars Of Eastertide

26 May

Roman Rite Ordinary Form
Easter ends on Pentecost Sunday, as there is No Octave of Pentecost.
Roman Rite Extraordinary Form, also called The Tridentine Calendar, Pentecost begins with The Vigil Of Pentecost. This Ecchlesiastical Calendar is still Valid. Easter Ends on The Octave or 8th Day, so Eastertide ends this Saturday. There are Three Ember Days in Pentecost, namely Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Roman Rite Catholics are encouraged to fast from Meat on Wednesday and Friday, commemorating both Spy Wednesday and Good Friday, so that the Growth Of The Holy Spirit in one’s life can be experienced. Self Control is a Gift Of The Holy Spirit.

Byzantine Rite Julian Calendar is called The AfterFeast of Pentecost. It occurs from Monday to Wednesday. Pentecost on this Calendar is 3 Days.In The Byzantine Rite, Pentecost is also called Trinity Sunday.
Byzantine Rite Gregorian Calendar means Pentecost Sunday is the same as Roman Rite Catholics plus the Two Day AfterFeast.
For Roman Rite Traditional Catholics, they can also add the Extra Celebration to Trinity Sunday. Eastertide Celebrations would end on Wednesday, June 2nd, 2015. One Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church on E7th Street in the East Village in Manhattan, St. George Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, has an English Language Divine Liturgy at 4:00PM. Like the Tridentine Latin Mass, the Byzantine Catholic Divine Liturgy Of St. John Chrysostom(Bishop, Confessor, Doctor Of The Church), you will be Awed.

Deo Gratias!

Latin Mass Resumes New Years Eve & Day

28 Dec

On Wednesday Evening at 8PM, December 31st, 2014 at Our Lady Of Mercy on Kessel Street, Forest Hills, Queens, NY, the Ordinary Form Mass will be offered in Latin.

On Thursday, January 1st, 2015, at 9:00AM, Mass in the Vetus Ordo, the Tridentine Latin Mass of 1962, will be offered at St. John’s Cemetery Chapel in Middle Village, Queens, NY.

Certain Feasts will be Latin Mass at Holy Innocents R C Church on West 37th Street in Midtown Manhattan. Other Masses of Daily Nature will be at Our Lady Queen Of Martyrs on Ascan Avenue and Queens Boulevard in Forest Hills, Queens, NY. Also in January, I will resume weekend attendance in the Byzantine Rite at either St George Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church on East 7th Street in Manhattan’s East Village or Holy Cross Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church on 30th Street and 31st Avenue in Astoria, Queens, NY. I might even attend a Ruthenian Greek Catholic Divine Liturgy at St Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Church on East 15th Street and 2nd Avenue(Sundays at 10AM).

The Christmas Season at Our Lady Queen Of Martyrs has been superb. Even a Latin Byzantine Aficionado like me, needed a break, so OLQM became a great place for Ordinary Form Mass.

Happy Christmastime!

1967-The 1st Guitars Are Played At Mass

30 Nov

It was 1967 & The Vietnam War was in full stride. The Tridentine Form Mass in Vulgar Tongue was in use. In fact, everything went to Vulgar Tongue in 1967, except for the Solemn High Mass. In some Parishes, Tables were being used as Altars.
So when I went into the 7th Grade in September, 1967, there were further changes on the Horizon. Two Nuns donned the 1st Novus Ordo Habits. Religion became a mixture of Sociology and Political Science. And at Mass on Sunday, the 1st Guitars were Strummed. The “I, Mine, Me” Muzak reached into The Holy Sacrifice of The Mass in the Roman Rite. Welcome to the World of “The Greenwich Village Coffee House”, only that the Holy Sacrifice of The Mass was the Saving Grace, as this so called “Folk Music” was syrupy dreck. Stately Hymns such as “O Sacrament Most Holy” & “Humbly We Adore Thee”, were being replaced with “Kumbaya”, “Blowin’ In The Wind” and “Sons Of God, Hear His Holy Word”(Which was the 1st Quasi Folk Song to imply that the Novus Ordo Mass was coming, Table and All). And the Music was mostly “I Love Me.”
With the absence of the haunting silence during the Offertory and Consecration, here came the guitars. It was Preparation for what lie ahead, on Sunday, November 30th, 1969.
Then came the New Mass with Abridged Prayers, New Prayers and Modern, more syrupy Music. Fewer people came to Mass. Mass Schedules were cut at Parishes. Lines for The Sacrament of Penance were short. The young people, by and large, stopped going to Mass.

But with the Return of The Tridentine Latin Mass, young people started coming to Mass again.

Ahhh, But, Hope Springs Eternal!

Deo Gratias!

The Nativity Fast(St. Phillip’s Fast)

22 Nov

The Byzantine Catholic Churches as well as other Eastern Catholic Churches, as well as the Eastern Orthodox Churches as well as the Oriental Orthodox Churches, all have what is called “Saint Phillip’s Fast”, commonly called The Nativity Fast.
For what St. John Chrysostom(Bishop, Confessor, Doctor of The Church, Feast on the Tridentine Latin Mass Calendar is January 27th) said about Fasting that it is more than a Food Fast, rather it is a time of Prayer, a time to give up Sinning with your thoughts, ears and mouth.
This Fast used to be observed as the Advent Fast in the Roman Rite. Now the only reminders of Advent in the Roman Rite are the Non Praying of The “Gloria In Excelsis Deo”, except on December 8th(Feast of The Immaculate Conception), the 4 Advent Candles with Advent Wreath & that the Priest wears the Penitential Colour of Lavender. Then, there are the Communal Penance Services.
Even though I’m Roman Rite Catholic, I will be following the Byzantine Rite Practice of no meat on Wednesday and Friday for the 1st two weeks of Advent and may extend it to Christmas in the Roman Rite.
Wednesday Abstinence commemorates “Spy Wednesday”, when Judas Iscariot went to the Pharisees to betray Jesus. Friday Commemoration is for Good Friday when Jesus Christ died on The Cross. This, so many years ago, was the Roman Rite Catholic Practice.
Besides, I need to sacrifice the pounds I have put on me. Eating too much junk, doesn’t Give Glory To God. It says that I have been selfish.
The St. Phillip’s Fast (Nativity Fast) begins November 28th(Gregorian Calendar, which is November 15th, Julian Calendar).
Pray for The One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church, Always. Remember the Pope, Bishops, Priests, Deacons and Religious as well The Souls in Purgatory. Offer up one’s Prayers and Fasts for them. Ask the Intercession of Holy Mary Theotokos, Mother of God, Always and Especially during this Period.

Kyrie Elaison!
Deo Gratias!

I May Return To Novus Mass, This Saturday

20 Nov

I realise that One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church in the Roman Rite, has Two Distinctive Forms of Liturgy.
Both come to the same conclusion that the Bread and Wine become the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ.
Both are occasions of Grace. That I must Not Forget. And since it is a Morning Mass, there is no danger of “I Love Me”Muzak.
Note that the 1st Novus Ordo Mass will be at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs R C Church on Queens Boulevard and Ascan Avenue in Forest Hills, Queens, NY.
Later, I will head to Streecha for Thanksgiving Dinner. Streecha is owned and operated by St. George Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church on East 7th Street in Manhattan’s East Village. Afterwards, I may head to Holy Cross Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church on 30th Street and 31st Avenue in Astoria, Queens for The 24th Sunday After Pentecost.
Then, on Sunday, 11/23/14, I will head to the Tridentine Latin Mass for the 24th and Last Sunday After Pentecost at St John’s Cemetery Chapel in Middle Village, Queens.

Happy Thanksgiving!

The Feast of The Immaculate Conception

18 Nov

Roman Rite Catholic Church is Monday, December 8th, 2014:
In the Byzantine Rite Catholicism, December 8th on the Julian Calendar, a Sunday, which is 4th Sunday Of Advent in the Gregorian Calendar.
Byzantine Rite Eastern Orthodoxy does not recognize this, as their belief is that Mary is purified at The Annunciation. Yet, on December 9th(Julian Calendar), Mary Theotokos Mother, St. Anne, her Birthday is celebrated(12/22 on Gregorian, a Monday).
The Byzantine Rite Divine Liturgy of St John Chrysostom has many Litany Chants for The Blessed Virgin Mary Theotokos, as does the Byzantine Rite Divine Liturgy of St Basil The Great.

The Byzantine Rite Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church may operate on a Different Calendar(Julian), a difference of 13 days from the Gregorian Calendar, but this is a Truly, Traditional Catholic Church and Liturgy.
“We pray for Our Holy and Universal Pontiff, Francis, Pope of Rome, for Our Patriarch Sviatoslav, for Our Metropolitan Stefan, for Our God Loving Bishop Paul…” is recited during the Liturgy FOUR Times.
IF THAT isn’t Catholic, then Shame on you.

Deo Gratias!

“Three Pro XXII”

4 Nov

This is the 22nd Sunday After Pentecost, the 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time and 3rd in the Countdown to The 50th Anniversary of The Vernacularized Portions of The Tridentine Form Mass, as well as to the 45th Anniversary of The Mass of Paul VI, which led to the Queens Latin Mass Group’s Battle Cry of “No NO”, which is chanted at the Post Holy Communion Meeting of The Queens Latin Mass Group “Parking and Chowder Society” Tailgating Party, an idea taken from the NY Jets in their Shea Stadium Days.

“Three, Set, No NO, Hut, Hut” are the After Mass Audibles for XXII Sunday After Pentecost.

Hic Et Nunc(Hat Tip to Fr Daniel Champoli for Latin Version of “Here and Now)

Feast Of Christ The King(Byzantine and Tridentine)

26 Oct

Let me put it this way, only the Ordinary Form Calendar does this on the  4th Sunday of November in 2014.
I noticed this when new chants were done at the Saturday Vigil 5:00PM Divine Liturgy of St John Chrysostom at Holy Cross Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Astoria, Queens. The Byzantine Rite Divine Liturgy was recited, but still beautiful.
The Gospel of St John,(18:was the one read and preached. This is also the same one to be preached prior to Advent in November.
As Fr Cyryl asked in his Homily, do we always take The Christ Seriously?
Those are Good Words for The Feast. I will be listening again today in the Tridentine Latin Mass at St John’s Cemetery Chapel in Middle Village, Queens.

Over in the Roman Rite Catholic Ordinary Form, it is merely the 30th Sunday Of Ordinary Time. The Eastern Catholic Churches and Tridentine Latin Mass(Same Gospel)still have The Feast of Christ The King in October.
It is also a Time of Remembrance as a Dear Friend sent me a Text that her Brother George had died. Like Members of The Families I am remembering today, I shall remember George.

Kyrie Elaison!
Deus Exaudinos!

Holy Cross Ukrainian At 5PM

25 Oct

And St. John’s Cemetery Chapel in Middle Village, Queens, with Holy Cross Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Astoria, Queens, this will be for the Celebration of The Feast of Christ The King. This is a year where the Byzantine Rite coincides with The Roman Rite, Especially on the Tridentine Latin Mass Calendar, on the last Sunday in October. This is also the 20th Sunday After Pentecost on both these Traditional Liturgical Calendars.
I shall remember my Benefactors at these Liturgies, and pray for the Repose of The Souls of Members of my own Family and of The Brother of The Woman who aided me greatly in 2013, as well as for those Brethren in both the Knights of Columbus and Ancient Order of Hibernians who lost Family Members.
Traditional Catholic Liturgy brings me closer to The Triune God. It is most uplifting, Spiritually Speaking, especially Byzantine and Gregorian Chant.

Kyrie Elaison
Deo Gratias

The Conversation Of The Faithful

11 Oct

It was in the basement of Holy Innocents Parish in Manhattan, that Four of us gathered together to talk about Matters of The Catholic Establishment.
Michael Voris, Michael Matt, John Vennari and Christopher Ferrara were all mentioned. Michael Voris is Trapped and Exposed as a Neo Catholic. For he talks tough about Priests and Bishops, but leaves out The Bishop of Rome, the Former Archbishop of Buenos Aires, who has a mean streak when it comes to Traditional Catholics in the Roman Rite. In Michael Voris’s Case of awaiting appointment as Judge Censor of The Pontifical Commission For The Censorship Of Known Traditional Catholic Writers, he excludes his own scribblings which are incomplete, as Michael Voris believes that he alone shall have sole access to the Holy See.
While it is great that Michael Voris has spoken about the Rather Liberal Timothy Michael Cardinal Dolan in regards to a planned shutdown of Holy Innocents, he conveniently forgets that the Current Pontiff is NO Amico of The Tridentine Latin Mass. In the case of Fr John Wylie from South Africa, who exhorted The Faithful at Holy Innocents to fight for The Tridentine Latin Mass and since Fr Wylie was assigned to The Holy See Mission at the United Nations, located in St. Agnes Parish, Home to where the Tridentine Latin Mass came out of The Proverbial Catacombs and where Mum was Baptized, Fr Wylie utterly infuriated Timothy Michael Cardinal Dolan and, as we do suspect, His Holiness, hence, Fr Wylie was exiled to South Africa, to silence his exhortations on the Subject of preserving Holy Innocents Parish, known for the Only Daily Latin Mass in NYC.
Michael Voris Neo Catholic!
Michael Matt, Christopher Ferrara, Louis Verrecchio and John Vennari are appreciated. They actually “Complete the Story”, which Michael Voris refuses to do.
